Amos Sykes, 35, of Quincy, was ordered held without bail on Monday, Aug. 14 after being arraigned for assaulting a woman in Boston's South End two days earlier, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden.
Sykes attacked a woman who was walking on Columbus Avenue, according to the Boston Police Department. Witnesses heard the woman's screams and saw him sitting on top of her, punching her head repeatedly.
A "Good Samaritan" jumped in before Sykes was able to take off the woman's clothing. Police arrived to find the "Good Samaritan" fighting with Sykes in an attempt to defend the woman.
Sykes tried to dash from the scene but police immediately captured and arrested him.
The woman was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“This was a nightmarish attack that left the victim bloodied and bruised, and would likely have resulted in an even worse outcome if not for the extraordinarily brave intervention of a Good Samaritan," Hayden said. "In cases like this, the victim’s injuries often transcend the physical."
Sykes is facing charges of indecent assault and battery on a person over 14 years old and assault and battery, leading to injuries.
A dangerousness hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
